Middle Grade Adventures

My first real passion for books came about when I discovered classical science fiction adventure novels as a teenager.

Every week I would haunt the shelves of my local public library for anything I could find from authors such Isaac Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, Samuel Delaney, Andre Norton and my favourite, Lois McMaster Bujold.

I was a fan girl in the days before social media and author websites.

That enthusiasm, that passion for stories well-told, and a need to experience new ideas and story worlds has never gone away, irrespective of how much crime and romance fiction I read and write every week. I can always find time to enjoy a science fiction or science fantasy novel, particularly when it is written for middle grade and teenage readers.

After decades of reading. I believe that this is a golden age for speculative fiction for readers aged nine or older.

There is so much wonderful fiction being written for middle grade and young adults, it is little wonder that the movie and mass entertainment industries have seized upon books such as the Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Hunger Games, and Divergent series.

They are great stories with characters that speak to young people in a unique way.

And the best thing about this new wave of teen fiction? Now I can enjoy it not only as a reader, but I can also see it from the perspective of a writer.

In 2016, it is my goal to write a Science Fiction Adventure story for 9+ readers and learn as much as I can about the story craft needed to create a compelling story in this genre – and share that with you. Watch this space!
